明初期北曲形成金陵、汴梁、云中三派,其中中州以弦索调名都;明中后期增加了北方俗曲的元素,形成弦索时剧。而弦索腔则为明末清初在北方俗曲基础形成的北曲俗唱之另一格。“北曲、弦索、弦索调、弦索腔”四概念中,北曲涵括弦索;弦索包含弦索调;弦索调与弦索腔在渊源上有联系,演唱主体差别大于重合。《琵琶记》非但不是南曲入弦索之始,恰恰是南曲背离弦索北曲旧有格范之始。弦索调清唱与剧唱非制动关系,是此消彼长、互有你我的互动关系。
