A randomized cDNA library was constructed from plasma containing non-A, non-B hepatitis and then screened with serum from a patient diagnosed as non-A, non-B hepatitis to isolate a cDNA that was verified to encode a non-A Non-Hepatitis B-specific antigens. This clone template is not a host DNA but an RNA molecule other than non-A, non-B factor. The RNA molecule is at least 10,000 nucleotides in length and has a positive strand with the ability to encode non-A, non-B hepatitis antigens. These materials suggest that the clone is derived from the non-A, non-B hepatitis virus gene and is consistent with the envelope virus and flavivirus nature of the virus. This molecular biological advancement is of great value in isolating and identifying other unidentified infectious agents.
