农业部下达的由北京农业工程大学承担的“农用机(电)水井滤水机构所用土工织物的研制”课题于1989年4月在北京通过技术鉴定。目前我国农用机(电)井数量很大,据1984年统计,全国共有280万眼,因滤水结构产生涌砂或阻塞的就有14眼,造成经济损失4亿元。该课题组在我国首次将工土织物引入水井工程,进行了系统的实验、研究和现场考核。根据天然含水砂层的具体情况,确定了水井工程用的土工织物的设计准则,并对产品提出了规格化、系统化的要求,供用户选择。采用土工织物作为滤层与常规采用的棕皮包裹作为滤水材料相比,具有施工简单,易于保证质量和寿命长、省工、省料等优点,每 m~2滤层材料可省80元,同时使水井寿命提高3~5倍,具有较大的经济与社会效益。
