Based on the in-depth interviews with Ningbo’s “Migrant Youth”, this article depicts the current Chinese youth’s pursuit of freedom and independence, as well as flexible and individualized modes of active and passive dependence on family resources and social capital from the two dimensions of resistance and dependence. In the process of separation and reinsertion into family, Migrant Youth practice practical kinship and lead to the reconstruction and redevelopment of the original family relations. Under current social rules, young individuals tend to go on the path of popularization that looks like they are individualized but actually follow the masses. Starting from the current institutional design and endogenous egotism in China, this article explores the underlying mechanism behind this flexible individualization, further explores the path of individualization of Chinese youth, enriches the study of individualization in China and promotes the development of China’s modernization.
