西安大慈恩寺是唐代长安城最宏伟的皇家寺院,玄奘法师在这里生活了11年。由玄奘法师亲自督造的大雁塔是古都西安的象征。大雁塔始建于公元652年(唐高宗永徽三年),玄奘法师为供奉从印度带回的佛像、舍利和梵文经典,在慈恩寺的西塔院建起一座五层砖塔,建成30年后不幸坍塌。当时在位的武则天和王公贵族集资,重新修建该塔。五代时期的后唐王朝对大雁塔进行了改建。明朝万历三十二年大雁塔最后的大规模修建,对其进行了维修加固,现在的7层阁楼式砖塔高达64米。
