The prehistoric pottery, the bronze ware of the Zhou Dynasty, the calligraphy of the Jin and Tang dynasties, the paintings of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, the porcelain, the lacquerware, jades, and ivory carvings in the Ming and Qing dynasties vividly demonstrated to the people the footprints of the development of the Chinese nation. However, due to man-made reasons, this precious legacy of the Forbidden City was actually separated from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. According to two old gentlemen who witnessed the shipment of the National Palace Museum to Taiwan, at the end of 1948 the Kuomintang government saw a continuous loss of military power.
