From early 1912 to the end of 1914, scholars in Taiwan traveled across the mainland for nearly three years. Lian Heng’s “Travels in the Mainland” records the political situation and social changes in the early years of the Republic of China. It shows a vivid scene of the dispute between China’s South and North that year, the coexistence of new and old, progress and backwardness, and the battle of light and darkness. Among them, the process of dispute over the Republic of China’s capital construction and its outcome, the performance of party politics and its causes of failure, whether the concept of democratic republic enjoys popular support, the new atmosphere after the 1911 Revolution and the still existing dark side of society all have their own uniqueness Insights and analyzes reflect the recognition of the patriots from the intellectual circles in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation era toward the motherland and the Revolution of 1911 and the enthusiasm for transforming society.
