海底重力测量是了解海底表层未显示出的地质构造极为有效的方法。将重力仪置于潜水艇中进行海底重力测量有许多实际应用,如以前曾用该方法推测海底岩浆喷发的形状与规模。 据有关资料,日本从1970年开始利用“SHINKAI潜水艇”开展海底重力测量试验,测量精度最大达1mGal。重力测量的时间与地面的相同,但到达测点后潜水艇注水沉入海底和测量后排水离开海底所需要的时间较长。与海平面重力测量相比,测量效率不高。
