In the course of realizing the four modernizations, the requirements for precision machining are increasing day by day. In this paper, some preliminary exploration is made on the EDM surface artificial defects. In the study of fracture mechanics, it is often necessary to make surface cracks (artificial defects) on specimens or components (such as pressure vessels) for testing. The material is 37SiMnCrMoV super high strength steel and the quenching hardness Rc = 60 ~ 62. The initial goal of the study was to produce a surface crack on the container as shown in Figure 1 to measure the fracture toughness k_ (1c)
