Mature red blood cells do not have nuclei, mitochondria and ribosomes, and therefore, no protein synthesis or oxidative phosphorylation. Despite its limited metabolic capacity, erythrocytes survive in the bloodstream for about 120 days. In order to maintain its normal disc shape, active cations are transported, adenine nucleotide maintenance pathways are maintained, and red blood cells must utilize adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for the synthesis of glutathione. About 1% of circulating red blood cells are reticulocytes, these red blood cells have mitochondria and ribosomes. ATP can be produced by oxidative phosphorylation.
