The latest figures released by the International Association of Tropical Timber Technology (ATIBT) show that in 2009 most wood from western Africa and the Congo Basin experienced a substantial reduction in timber exports in 2009 compared with 2008. The decrease in exports is directly related to the economic crisis in Africa in 2008. The economic crisis triggered a fall in demand for tropical timber around the world in the autumn of 2008, which forced some franchisees, sawmills and other wood-processing enterprises in Africa to make drastic cuts or to completely shut down factories.
