冬红果是蔷薇科苹果属落叶灌木或小乔木,花姿绰约、果实靓丽,是早春观花和秋冬观果树种,适合园林绿化栽培应用。冬红果株形紧凑,株高可达6m,枝条灰褐色,小枝红褐色,幼时疏生柔毛。叶片椭圆形至广椭圆形,先端短锐尖,基部广楔形,缘有细锯齿,叶背幼时有柔毛。腋生伞形花序,花4～6朵,具长花梗,花在蕾期较红艳,开放后呈淡粉白色,单瓣或重瓣。梨果成熟后鲜红色,近球形,基部不凹陷。花期4～5月,果熟期9～10月,经冬不落,可持续到第二年的2～3月。
