In 1956, the Twentieth Congress of the CPSU had a strong reaction within the British Communist Party. The British Communist Party historian’s panel demanded that the leadership of the British Communist Party learn from the Soviet Union, discuss the issues exposed by the Twentieth Congress of the CPSU, and conduct democratic reforms within the Party . However, the leadership of the British Communist Party strongly suppressed intra-Party discussions and refused to carry out reforms. The position of the leadership of the British Communist Party eventually forced some members of the historian’s team to quit the party. After this incident, these historians broke away from the dogmatic treatment of the Marxist approach and combined the historical theory of Marxism with the historical study of positivism to form the British Marxist school of history (or the new social history school ).
