所谓祥瑞,就是显示吉兆的事物。古人认为祥瑞是上天所赐,故而也叫天瑞,又叫微祥、嘉祥。祥瑞出自天人感应,君主修德,感动上天,才会降下祥瑞。《汉书·元后传》王章日“天道聪明,佑善而灾恶,以瑞异为符效。今陛下以未有继嗣,引近定陶王,所以承宗庙,重社稷,上顺天心,下安百姓。此正义善事,当有祥瑞。”《后汉书·明帝纪》永平六年(六三),王雒山出宝鼎,庐江太守献之,称颂“祥瑞以降,以应有德”。祥瑞说法虽见于汉代,起源却很早。汉刘向《新序·杂事二》:“成王周召而海内大治,越裳重译,祥瑞并降。”两汉魏晋时期盛极一时,
