After several years of collaborative research, Japan’s Ministry of Post and the Office of Science and Technology have prepared a feasibility study on the establishment of a stratospheric radio broadcasting system for launching a drones communications base about 20 km above the Earth. At present, Japan’s radio communications are relayed by microwave relay stations or low-orbit communications satellites. The proposed new communication system, which is highly situated between microwave stations and communications satellites (orbital orbits 80-80 km above the Earth), has a transmission distance Far away from the microwave station and at a lower cost than the communications satellite. The system will be developed within 10 years with a total investment of about 15 billion yen to provide a new type of communication system for the 21st century.
