TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, has started building the first chip plant in mainland China. The plant invested 898 million US dollars, a factory located in Shanghai’s Songjiang Industrial Park suburb, the construction of local construction companies have signed a contract with the TSMC plant construction agreement. The plant will be built in August 2003, when TSMC will relocate its production equipment to the new plant in Taiwan and move to about 600 employees at the same time. Last September, TSMC made a request to Taiwan Province to build its first chip manufacturing plant in the Mainland. Last year, Taiwan said it would ease the restrictions on Taiwan chip companies investing in the Mainland and lift the ban on investment. Some chip makers in Taiwan say the ban undermines their ability to compete with foreign rivals because the chip industry in mainland China is just beginning and its semiconductor market will become the largest in the world.
