竞走是深受我国人民喜爱的传统优势体育项目,在国际上曾处于领先地位。1983年,大连运动员徐永久在第二届世界杯10公里竞走比赛中为我国夺得世界田径大赛中的第1枚金牌。1992年巴塞罗那奥运会,辽宁运动员陈跃玲也是在女子竞走项目上夺得我国第1块田径奥运金牌,2000年悉尼奥运会王丽萍又夺得女子20公里竞走的金牌。但近年来我国竞走运动却走入了低谷,特别是2003年巴黎世锦赛,一大批中国竞走运动员被罚下。2005年随着朱红军、姜静等年轻运动员的涌现,也许赫尔辛基世锦赛会成为中国田径这个传统优势项目复苏的起点,但中国队庞大的竞走阵容仍然无功而返:在男、女20公里两项比赛中,中国男女队员均无缘八强,在随后的男子50公里竞走比赛中除赵成良跻身前八获得第五名外,其余两名运动员均未及40公里处双双离开赛场。
