Cooperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice is an important theory in pragmatics. Cooperative Principle includes four maxims: the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation and the maxim of manner. When one or more than one maxims of Cooperative Principle are flouted, some special language effects including humor arise. This thesis aims to analyze the humour produced by violating Cooperative Principle in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice with the dialogues as the basis.
