潘天寿和他的前辈吴昌硕、齐白石、黄宾虹并称为现代四家。作为中国近代绘画史上载理论研究和绘画实践两方面都具有极高造诣的艺术家,他的绘画观念和创作实践密切结合且自成体系,作品源于传统且具有鲜明的风格。在当时中国传统绘画遭受外来文化冲击之时,他始终保持着哲学家的智慧,坚守着中国文化的精神,以唐宋谨严的创作理念,扩展了文人画的表现图式,把画作里的中和之气、雄浑之风,表达了自己独到的美学追求。
