Between 1980 and 1981, more than 50 million women worldwide used oral contraceptives. More than half of them are purchased from pharmacies or other stores by prescription or without prescription. The rest, including about 7 million Chinese women, is planned by the government or various departments. In developed countries, almost all those who take the pill purchase oral contraceptives. Sales peaked in 1975, at around 287 million cycles, and by 1979 dropped to 253 million cycles. Since then, stabilized at this level. The decline in sales mainly occurred in the United States. On the contrary, many countries in Latin America have seen an increase of about 50% in sales since 1975. Other developing regions are all supplied by public and private programs but in smaller proportions. From the U.S. Agency for International Development
