“鬼”字考源——兼论中国传统生命理解中的鬼神信仰

“鬼者,歸也”的训释一直是先秦以来的学界共识,在以表意为主的汉字传统中,这一训释与“鬼”字的构形以及人们的鬼神信仰之间的关系,自汉代《说文解字》以来即有探讨,但宥於“鬼”字小篆形体的限制,而未能有所贯通。至清末甲骨文的发现,人们看到了“鬼”字更多的古文形体,於是对它的形义关系也便有了进一步的反思和讨论,然迄今所见诸说纷纭,且各有未安之处。今按“鬼”字所从之“田”形符号實为人頫最古老的象徵符号之一,它普遍地用於宗教与丧葬场所,象微宇宙之中心和作为终极本体的神灵,“鬼”字的构形正反映了中国传统生命观中人死后向终极本体神的回歸思考。这一造字理念也与汉语中“鬼”字所在的“语义场”相吻合:即作为终极本体的神生成万物并寓於万物之中,其寓於人者有陰阳(即动静)二种情形,阳而动者(本体保持自然的形态)为魂,陰而静者(本体束於所化的形质)为魄,人死魂歸於天,魄则随屍体而歸於地,此时寓於尸体中的本体存在则名为鬼,至尸体消解,鬼亦返歸於作为本体共相的神中,并与之一起参与新的因缘生化之旅。 The interpretation of “ghosts, returning also ” has always been the academic consensus since the pre-Qin period.
