There is so much controversy that no other U.S. defense issue has been so widely debated, interrogated and challenged like the Navy’s aircraft carrier. Almost from the very beginning of the Cold War in the late 1940s, some people were constantly questioning the carrier’s security needs, sometimes sharply. Until recently, the matter was again raised because of the issue of a new generation of naval aircraft carriers.
