在中国绚丽璀璨的戏曲园林中有四大古老声腔:南昆、北弋,东柳、西梆,其中的东柳,即山东的柳子戏。元、明时期,柳子戏在“弦索”小曲的基础上逐渐形成,到了清代中叶,柳子戏已发展成有相当规模的流行剧种。柳子戏音乐是曲牌体,拥有600余支曲牌。音乐乃剧种之魂,是区别剧种的重要标志。柳子戏的声腔风格多样,既淳朴又委婉,既粗犷又细腻。喜爱柳子戏的观众曾有这样的赞美:“小旦唱的颤巍巍,小生唱的云上飞,青衣哎哎水上漂,花脸横磨声
