The abstract collage style stems from the early Cubist paintings of Picasso and Braque, a revolution in the materials and techniques of painting that were rarely used for oil painting. Between 1925 and 1930 Magritte experimented with collage, adding pieces of music tailored to irregular shapes to his work, adding abstract, vague elements to his work. The irregular shape of the score is reminiscent of a musical instrument such as the neck of a violin or cello, but it is also very much like a marionette figure in a comedy, such as a fable character.
