夏商以来,黄河流域一直是我国的政治、文化中心。到春秋战国时,社会制度逐步由奴隶制向封建制转化。生产关系的变革,带来经济繁荣和文化昌盛。在楚国这个幅源辽阔的大国里, 更具发展规模和先进性。经济上,楚的资源丰富,地广物博,以货币经济为重心的商业城市不断涌现,遍布今湖北、安徽、江苏、河南南部等地,这是列国难以相比的。文化艺术方面,南《楚辞》与北《诗经》双峰并峙。货币方面,北方货币只有仿生产工具一种形制,而楚币有传统的贝形、仿生产工具形、金版形3种形制。北方有刀、布、钱3个种类,楚则有蚁鼻钱、金币、布币3 个种类,其中蚁鼻钱铸行约500余年,形制不变,内容统一,是先秦铸量最大、流通最广、发行最为成功的一种货币,也是贝形货币的最高级形态。楚的金币是中国最早,同时也是中国历史
