The most commonly used statistical parameters that reflect the degree of dispersion of variables are the variance and standard deviation. The standard deviation of the sample is the square root of the sample variance. Variances and standard deviations in geosciences are widely used. This article describes how to calculate the standard deviation under certain conditions in research, especially in geosciences.
