Many techniques for measuring the cross-sectional area of a single-base (backscatter) radar are well known, but the measurement of the cross-sectional area of a bistatic radar is inherently difficult. This article describes bistatic radar cross-sectional measurement techniques that circumvent some of the major obstacles. It uses a variant continuous wave “zero balance” method, resulting in rapid measurement. A network analyzer and processing computer are incorporated into the current reflective ground plane system to improve bi-site capabilities and increase flexibility. Several targets were measured and compared with their known bistatic radar cross-sections, which proved the correctness and practicability of this technique.
