当公社社员为保卫公社而殊死战斗时,马克思断言:“即使公社被搞垮了,斗争也只是延期而已。公社的原则是永存的,是消灭不了的;在工人阶级得到解放以前,这些原则将一再表现出来。” 在巴黎公社失败、国际工人运动一度处于低潮时,他们的必胜信念丝毫也没有动摇。他们坚信,经过若干曲折和反复,无产阶级革命最终胜利是肯定无疑的。当时迫切的任务是宣传公社的不朽业绩,保卫公社的革命原则,恢复和发展工人运动。马克思在《法兰西内战》中赞扬了巴黎工人的革命首创精神,对公社经验作了精辟总结。他深刻地阐明无产阶级必须摧毁旧国家机器这一重要原理;着重指出公社是新型的真正的民主制,是对人民负责的工作机关,清晰地表述了巴黎公社的基本原则及历史意义。

In the “French Civil War,” Marx praised the pioneering spirit of the workers in Paris and gave a brilliant summary of the experience of communes. He profoundly expounded the important principle that the proletariat must destroy the machinery of the old state. He stressed that the commune is a new type of real democracy and a responsible working body for the people. It clearly expresses the basic principles and historical significance of the Paris Commune.
