Experiments on the collision of hydrogen nuclei and helium nuclei under deep mountains in Italy confirm the mystery of the cosmic composition: why the amount of lithium-6 observed in the universe today is very different from the theoretical predictions. The international team working at Gran Sasso’s underground nuclear astrophysics laboratory (LUNA) measured for the first time the rate of lithium-6 formation at conditions similar to the universe’s formation for a few minutes. The measurements show that almost all lithium-6 was actually formed long after the big bang took place. Existing nuclide
