Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function in health and dis-ease: RGCs are extremely high-maintenance neurons con-necting the eye to the brain trough the optic nerve. In order to produce and propagate action potentials along the unmy-elinated RGC axons and support axonal transport of mate-rials back and forth from the eye to the brain, RGC require large amounts of energy. Therefore, RGCs are under consid-erable metabolic stress when healthy and become particu-larly vulnerable in disease, resulting in blindness (Morgan, 2004).
