一、The Situation And Function Teaching Method And The ways To Carry It Out
The Situation and Function Teaching Method tends to make studends take an part in the leading activities with their brains, ears ,eyes, mouths and hands working together. Thus their abilities to distinguish, to teach themselves, to settle problems are trained and their brains, feelings, intelligence, characters, good thinking ways andthe views of the world are developed.
The Method has five elements: situation, feelings or emotion, structures, rules and communication function. They are connected with one another. Situation starts feelings or emotion. Feelings starts interest and wishes for further study. The interest and wishes make students eagerly know the meanings and produce wishes to communicate. During the communication, students try to master the structures. After making a careful study of structures, they draw a conclusion and make rules. Through practice, the communication function is realized and the abilities of communication are developed.
The following are some general ways of how to carry out this method.
(1)Direct contact with the English pronunciation and intonation
The teacher think carefully about the characters, facts and ideas of the text, and try to feel and understand them. Then the teacher reads or talks about the text in a certain descriptive or exaggerated pronunciation and intonation, while making reasonable use of stresses and rhythms. To do this, some tapes and records of the text would help.
The beautiful and interesting pronunciation and intonation make students absorded in the text and try to imitate. Then the wish for further study is started. It will give students enough courage and perseverance to smooth away difficulties.
(2)Analysis of structures and drilling of structures
1.The teacher puts out the structures and gives explanations and examples about the structures
2.The teacher gives students some chances to drill in oral practice.
3.The teachr stimulates students’ imagination by giving a certain situation, making students try to use the structures.
(3)Extension of the text
This can deepen the understanding of the text and strengthen what students have learned and improve their abilities. Here are some ways:
1.To find the descriptive, useful and interesting expressions in the text and retell the rexts.
2.To create some kind of situation and give some key words, requiring students to retell the text.
3.To ask and answer some questions about the text and then connect them to form a passage or story.
(4)Creation of new situation
The students are given some new situation and required to communicate using what they have learned in the text.
Here are some ways to create new situation:
1.To create new situation of listening or speaking to bring good atmosphere of communication.
2.To play games.
3.To design activities of completions.
4.To show pictures or objects.
5.To make use of films, TV programmesand tapes.
6.To make up a dialogue.
7.To ask questions.
