The concept of middle class comes from urban renewal studies in the developed western cities. But in Singapore, the term middle class is seldom used. Unlike the spontaneous and bourgeois middle classization process in Western cities, the urban renewal in Singapore is mainly government-led, with commercial and office-based development and construction in the downtown area. In spite of this, many of Singapore’s cities have shown the characteristics of middle-class as well as middle-class aesthetic tendencies in their renewal process. This article focuses on the urban renewal led by Singapore’s arts and culture and focuses on the bourgeois aesthetic in the urban renewal process.
