20世纪30年代初,茅盾的《子夜》和曹禺的《雷雨》相继问世,这两部作品表现了两位民族资本家吴荪甫和周朴园的生存状态,一个偏重于社会性,一个偏重于伦理性,不管是谁,不管身处何地,他们都在一种难以挣脱的尖锐冲突中挣扎、突围,他们具有时代特征、历史特征、文化特征的命运和所面临的生存伦理困境,在一定程度上构成了一种身份的互补、命运的互见,较为全面地再现了30年代中国资本家的历史宿命。
