利什曼原虫属动基体目锥体科。从进化角度看,动基体和眼虫均属第一个含有线粒体的真核细胞群,故它们在真核细胞进化中有独特地位。所有原核与真核细胞核糖体蛋白都是相当保守的,比较这些核糖体蛋白序列显示在原核与真核生物分化过程中,有些核糖体蛋白一直不变,而其它核糖体蛋白随真核细胞的进化而出现。大鼠和人编码核糖体蛋白的L_(11)基因已克隆出来。在古细菌与真细菌中尚出现L_(11)蛋白的原核类似物L_5。因此一个与L_(11)同源的蛋白在核糖体单元的进化过程中保守地存在。
