Homestake Mining Company is working to investigate the use of unconventional methods to treat difficult-to-mine gold from McLaughlin Mine to improve gold recovery. The gold of the Maclaurin mine is highly dye-impregnated throughout the sulphide ore and gold must be improved by oxidizing these sulphides. Holmström installed a slurry pressure oxidation unit (high pressure leaching tank) between the grinding and coal slurry extraction circuit to precipitate gold according to environmental and economic conditions.
