The Ontario Electricity Company’s Niagara Tunnel, which is 10.2 km long and has an inside diameter of 12.7 m, is designed to divert water from the Niagara River upstream of Hoshu Falls to the existing Sir Adam Beck Power Station near Queenstown. Design and construction contractor Straubberg used the world’s largest hard rock tunnel boring machine to excavate the tunnel.
