美国是一个崇尚精英治国,以WASP(White Anglo Saxon Protestant)文化为主导文化的国家。在美国人看来,“白色”不仅仅单纯代表人的生理面貌特征,它也在国家两百多年的发展史中被赋予了一层独特的象征意义,那就是高贵的、纯洁的种族优越性。所以美国人崇拜白色,重视白人思想及白人价值观,因为白色给美国人带来了更多的特权与更高的社会地位。但是,伴随着多元化文化在美国的不断融入与发展,美国对这一鲜明甚至有些敏感的颜色的理解与认识也在逐渐发生着改变。本文从美国文学与文化的角度去探析传统与现代美国社会中“白色”的具体象征意义,希望从中摸索和透析美国社会的主流价值观嬗变。
The United States is a country that advocates elite governance and takes culture as the leading culture of WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant). In the view of the Americans, “white ” is not only a simple representation of the physiognomy of a person, but it is also given a unique symbolic meaning in the history of more than two hundred years of development in the country. That is noble and pure Racial superiority. So Americans worship white and value whites and white values because white gives Americans more privileges and higher social status. However, with the continuous integration and development of a diversified culture in the United States, the understanding and understanding of this bright and even somewhat sensitive color are gradually changing in the United States. This essay probes into the concrete symbolic meaning of “White ” in both traditional and modern American society from the angle of American literature and culture, hoping to explore and analyze the evolution of the mainstream values of American society.
