《嘉莉妹妹》创作于美国向消费主导型社会转型的时期,人们的行为和心理越来越受到消费主义的影响。德莱塞通过嘉莉,这一在消费浪潮中沉浮的女性形象,揭示出消费主义笼罩下的社会特征及展现于其中的人际关系。本文以文本分析和文化批评相结合,分析体现在主人公身上及其所处环境中的消费主义的特征,探讨消费主义对德莱塞的影响及他对消费主义所持的态度。
“Sister Carrie” was created during the transition to a consumer-oriented society in the United States, and people’s behavior and mentality are increasingly influenced by consumerism. Dreiser, through Carrie, a female figure rising and falling in the wave of consumption, uncovered the social characteristics and the interpersonal relationships shown in consumerism. This article combines textual analysis and cultural criticism to analyze the characteristics of consumerism embodied in the protagonist and the environment in which it is located, and discusses the influence of consumerism on Dreiser and his attitude toward consumerism.
