NASA’s Michuid assembly plant is in the process of manufacturing five stages of the core of the space launch system (SLS). At the moment, the front skirts, box compartments and engine compartment sections used for the first flight have been completed. NASA, Boeing and materials experts have conducted a detailed review of tank welding letters to determine new welding parameters for liquid hydrogen storage tanks and liquid oxygen storage tanks. Hydrogen storage tanks will be self-sustaining friction stir welding, while SLS liquid hydrogen storage tanks are the largest processed parts of this welding process.
