Objective To understand the freshmen’s blood pressure status and provide a scientific basis for the prevention of adolescent hypertension. Methods A cluster sampling method was used to monitor the blood pressure of freshmen in Wannan Medical College from 2007 to 2009 and to compare the prevalence of high blood pressure among boys and girls with the existing diagnostic criteria of hypertension and to compare the blood pressure among different sexes Gender and freshmen’s percentile reference value. Results The systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were significantly higher in boys than in girls (P <0.05). The average systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in boys were (117.44 ± 12.76) and (73.32 ± 8.50) mmHg, respectively Respectively (106.51 ± 11.56) and (68.35 ± 8.05) mmHg. Gender percentiles reference values: systolic and diastolic blood pressure for men and women P3 and P97 were 95,142mmHg and 60,90 mmHg. The high prevalence of systolic blood pressure was found in boys and girls at 2.9% and 0.4% respectively, while the prevalence of diastolic blood pressure was 1.7% and 0.5% in boys and girls respectively. The prevalence of high blood pressure among boys and girls was 4.1% and 0.7% The differences in systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure between boys and girls were statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusions According to the current diagnostic criteria of hypertension, male and female students have a lower detection rate of high blood pressure. However, this study found that female students have lower percentile values of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure than boys. It is necessary to carry out a large sample Survey of College Students’ Blood Pressure Status.
