Tess of the D'Urbervilles,written by the great novelist Thomas Hardy,is regarded as one of the greatest tragedies.Analyzing Tess's characters of purity,responsibleness,rebelliousness and weakness,this paper intends to explain the causes of Tess's tragedy on the basis of exploring social reasons,family background and the direct and indirect influence of the two destructive figures Alec and Angel.
