湖南民歌按照文化变异和衍生关系可以排列出以下三个相对而言的文化衍生层次类型:一、存在于乡村未经任何加工的最原生态的山歌。二、一种是在乡村口头流传、较少或未经加工,但具有传统性的小调、谣曲和劳动号子;另一种是脱胎于乡村流行的各种山歌、谣曲等,多是一些时调、小曲、小令等小调体裁民歌。三、流行于现今社会,由专业曲词作者根据传统民歌进行编创的,并由专业歌唱演员表演的新民歌。这三种类型依次称为原生型、次生型、再生型。
