In May 1995, the Estonian authorities, in cooperation with the Swedish Navy, started the demining operation in the territorial sea of Estonia. The problem of mines was discovered after Russia’s Baltic Fleet was withdrawn. These mines were left over from the time of naval warfare in the Baltic Sea during World War II. The new role of the Estonian navy has made it necessary to face the immediate threat of mines that are hard to solve. When the Russian Navy left Estonia, it took away all the charts and the Baltic Fleet had never conducted any large-scale anti-mine operations and only conducted surveys and mine clearances on the major shipping lanes. Thus, no one knows where the mine is likely to exist. After an intergovernmental consultation between Estonia and Sweden, the survey vessel “Oceanographic Surveyor” was commissioned from July 25 to August 5, 1994
