Gas hydrate (commonly known as “combustible ice”) is a future ideal alternative source of oil and gas. Research on gas hydrate exploration and production technology, especially research and development of mining technology and testing, has drawn the great attention of many countries. In the past two years, great progress has been made in the international gas hydrate exploration test, with breakthroughs in Japan and the United States. As of March 12, 2013, Japan conducted a pilot test of natural gas hydrate in the South China Sea Trench. For the first time, methane was recovered from hydrate in the sea.
