Cataracts are an important cause of blindness in more than 100 countries around the world and are the third cause of blindness in the United States. Therefore, cataract has become an important public health issue. In 1984, more than 700,000 cataract surgeries were performed in the United States, and more than 85% had intraocular lens implantation. Although cataract surgery is highly successful, complications such as cystoid macular edema and corneal edema remain a problem. This report will indicate the current direction of intraocular lens implantation in the United States and describe the results of more than 2,500 intraocular lens implants made in the Wilmer Institute and those reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
