It is fine to say that the Chinese grow up by reading the prose of Zhu Ziqing, for there is a prose of Zhu Ziqing in the every edition of Chinese textbooks, even some passages need reciting. Such a beloved author is few among Chinese modern writers. The Sight of Father's Back and Moonlight over the Lotus Pond are Mr. Zhu’s two famous works. When I was a child, I particularly liked the sentences in Moonlight over the Lotus Pond, “Moonlight cascaded like water over the lotus leaves and flowers, and a light blue mist floating up from the pool made them seem washed in milk or caught in a gauzy dream…”, the sentences are so beautiful that I can recite almost the whole sentences now. For The Sight of Father's Back, I have no special feeling for it at first. I begin to understand the excellence of this passage with age, especially when I just married and settled down, and frequently felt that father sacrificed his life for me. A writer who can write down two works so different in style must no regret in his life.
Much later, by reading the Use of Chinese and Others of Mr. Zhu, I found another Zhu Ziqing who was totally different from that was reflected in above mentioned works. If Moonlight over the Lotus Pond reflects his beautiful language and The Sight of Father's Back describes the true family affection, Use of Chinese and Others is the reflection of leisure and freedom. I used to read a prose works Truth in Words edited by Mr. Yao Hongyue who wrote at the end of text, “The writer touched me most is Zhu Ziqing who left a gentle and cultivated expression on us. A set of his ‘talking’ essays made a great contribution to this book, and also made Mr. Zhu, with a new image distinct from the writer of The Sight of Father's Back, stand in the team of another fraction of prose writers – essay writers.”
The person who has a real amicable friendship with Zhu Ziqing is the illustrator of this book, Feng Zikai. I personally think that the coziest life for Sir Zhu was when he taught in Shangyu Chunhui Middle School. When Xia Mianzun, Zhu Ziqing, Feng Zikai and Zhu Guangqian these congenial friends gathered together to drink wine and tea, enjoy the spring and lake beside the beautiful White Horse Lake. Then, Zhu Ziqing and Feng Zikai built a friendship and the two often cooperated with each other, Mr. Feng invited Mr. Zhu to write a preface for his first comic Zikai Comic while Zhu inserted the picture that Feng drew for his daughter into his first prose collection The Sight of Father's Back.
Since 1928, the first Zhu’s book collecting Feng’s illustration was published, in the eighty years, although over a hundred editions of Zhu’s prose was published, it was a pity that no one put Feng’s illustration into Zhu’s prose again, until I saw the two volumes of Illustrated by Feng Zikai – Prose Collection of Zhu Ziqing published by Chunfeng Art Press. The book includes 70 illustrations of Feng Zikai, matching pictures with words, which can be called perfect.
The other feature of this book is the collection of all prose works of Zhu Ziqing, which hasn’t been seen in recent years. Reading Mr. Zhu’s prose is supposed to be the best way to know and get close to Zhu Ziqing.
