当今世界抽水蓄能机组的发展方向就是高水头化、大容量化、高转速化、可调速化。至今为止,世界投运的最高水头为676m、216MW(恰依拉),最大容量为457MW(巴斯康蒂)、最高转速为600r/min、216MW(恰依拉等)。由日本日立公司生产的用于东京电力公司葛野川蓄能电站的水头为728m、容量为475MVA、转速为500r/min的蓄能机组堪称世界最高水头和最大容量级的高转速抽水蓄能机组,已于1996年6月开始在工地安装,电站下部、尾水管等已装完,1997年4月安装蜗壳等以及水泵水轮机主机,预计年底装完并于1998年投运。
