Diatomaceous earth industry out of the recession of the early eighties, is now in a slow and steady growth stage. The United States ranks first in the world in the production and consumption of diatomaceous earth. And with the start-up of new businesses, its output will increase rapidly. In Europe, Romania ranks first in output, followed by France and the Soviet Union. Although France remains the major producer of European filter aid grade diatomaceous earth, it is also facing fierce competition from primarily US filter aid products. The main use of diatomaceous earth is for a wide range of industrial filter aids, including beer and other wines. 66% of diatomaceous earth produced in the United States in 1986 was used as a filter aid and the rest was used as a functional filler and some other sectors.
