Lawrence’s novel The Kangaroo tells the story of a British couple Somers and Harriet living in Australia. This article starts with the identity and survival of Somers, and argues that the novel highlights the “dark” nature of “home ” through the recurrence of the two encounters in Britain. On the one hand, Britain, as the “home”, became the target of their forced evasion, and Somers recalled and complained of “home” as a family member. On the other hand, their painful encounters in Britain have been recaptured in Australia and they can only leave again without gaining a sense of identity and belonging. In the departure and search of Somers, what is reflected is the value of the process of exploring the significance of “home ”.
