The current crisis is a product of the financialization of contemporary capitalism. The crisis started in the United States due to the extreme expansion of mortgage lending, including loans to the poorest of the working class. It unfolds through debt transactions between financial institutions. These phenomena are an integral part of financialization. In the past three decades, big businesses turned to open markets for financing, thereby pushing banks to look for other sources of profits. One way is to provide financial services to individual workers. This trend has been boosted by the contraction of public services such as housing, pensions and education. Another way is to engage in investment banking in the open financial markets. The financial profit squeezed directly from personal income constitutes a financial plunder. Together with the investment banking business, it contributed to this huge crisis of the moment. More generally, financialization supports the emergence of new classes of rentiers, which are largely defined by their relationship to the financial system, not ownership of the loanable capital. Finally, financialization poses important questions for financial capital and imperialism.
